Have a system in place for kids who have a more immediate concerns such as a report of bullying, feeling ill, or a bunch of things that may come up, but EVERYONE should already know what to do when these things come up so ALL people in the building can direct the student to where they need to go in that case. Work with with mental health team to come up with a way to ask teaching staff about concerns they have like this and try to set up something BEFORE it occurs.
This will provide relief to the system without expensive and overwhelming overhauls.

We are under relentless pressure to do more and be more, and we’re feeling overwhelmed. This session dives right into equipping educators with three practical tools that integrate well into their daily practice. No planning. No revisiting. No guessing. They will leave feeling confident in their ability to manage their own mental health needs while effectively responding to student concerns.
Our schools are dealing with a youth mental health crisis. We are constantly putting out fires, and in order to have long-term, sustainable improvement, we need to implement a plan for immediate relief to staff and students without adding to their workload. The long-term plan focuses on prevention, though in order to find respite now, we can start building proficiency in three skills: Self-Compassion, Social Plasticity, + Relationship Reciprocity. An overview of each of these skills and a tool to easily put each of them into practice will be covered in this session. Consequently, educators will be equipped to have an immediate positive impact on their students and on their own wellness as soon as they leave this session. We need to feel hopeful that change is possible, so that is our parting gift attendees will receive.

Ryan Pelkey, Teacher/Administrator/Author/Speaker/Mental Health Advocate
Ryan Pelkey is a teacher, athletic director, administrator, speaker and published author residing in Warrenton, Virginia. With over 23 years of educational experience, he is constantly proving that you are not "..just" a title or name. As a mental health advocate for teachers, Ryan has pushed for equity as all stakeholders in education come out of the pandemic with wants and needs that no one has been prepared for. He is a firm believer that all students can learn and the bar for that achievement needs to be set high. When he has any free time he can seen enjoying his favorite teams the Eagles and Yankees as well as spending time with his wife, 6 kids and 2 awesome dogs.
What is the most challenging mental health issue in your school or district right now?: Teachers do not have any services to help with their mental health needs. Students have school counselors, other SEL programs that promote mindfulness and a safe place to talk, but nothing has been created for teachers. We are losing teachers!
What are the barriers to overcoming that issue, and what do you believe is the best approach?: Listen. Just listen to what educators are saying. Take a moment to give a moment of time so a teacher can reflect, refocus and move forward. Also, give grace to educators, we do for students on a daily, we need to push for better support systems for all educators and proper funding so these supports stick around.

Ben Lusk is the Curriculum Director at Beechwood Independent Schools. He’s been an educator for 25 years: teacher for 13 and administration for 12. Be says that he “believe(s) that the world of education is undergoing a tectonic shift and I think it is exciting. As a forward thinking leader, I am ready for this challenge!”
Biggest school mental health issue in your district: Students tuning out, lack of engagement and teacher burnout
How is mental health currently addressed in your school(s), and what are the limitations?: We have an SEL program that is video based. Unfortunately, like many of these programs, it relies on catch phrases, silly animation, and artificial situations and students do not respond to it.
