“The scariest thing to me is living a life full of fear. That’s not living. That’s relying on fear-based instinct to make choices for us. I’ve dedicated my life to pushing back on those instincts and leaning into the discomfort.”
Rebecca knows fear. As an evolutionary biologist and stress expert, Dr. Rebecca Heiss is dedicated to helping us become self-aware and overcome our instinctual limitations – the ancient, often subconscious fears that hold us back from our best leadership, optimal performance and our happiest lives. Her research has been designated “transformative” by the National Science Foundation and it is waking up audiences around the world. As an author of the newly acclaimed book Instinct, founder and CEO of the leadership 360-review mobile application, icueity, and highly sought-after professional speaker, Rebecca has found her calling in helping others recognize the power of biological applications in their lives. A former educator, Dr. Heiss spent much of her earlier career in the classroom at both the high school and college levels and was recruited to be a founding member of an innovative charter school with a focus on entrepreneurial thinking and impact-based learning. Today she shares her work from stages around the world as a full-time speaker working to transform people’s fears to fuel they can use to go ALL-IN and find new heights of performance. Rebecca’s “fearless” message inspires hope and actionable insights to train our brains to work for us, rather than against us in times of uncertainty. With surprising humor and palpable energy, no matter if Dr. Heiss is delivering virtually or on stage, she wins over her audiences with interactive, inspiring, and timely takeaways. Rebecca lives in South Carolina with her spoiled rotten dogs named Guinness & Murphy and every day tries to live her life motto: “spread happy.”

What is the most challenging mental health issue in your school or district right now?:
Most recently I have seen mental health challenges for staff associated with added coverage responsibilities, continuing academic and behavioral challenges with students as a result of COVID, and turnover in leadership adding anxiety.

How is mental health currently addressed in your school(s), and what are the limitations?: In my work, I see many people trying to provide one-hit wonders for professional development and not really embedding practices into the systems. More quick offerings that do not follow the staff through the year, let alone a month beyond the work.

Points covered relating to school mental health improvement?
Leadership must invest in themselves as well as the staff--otherwise, they are steering the shift listlessly.
Professional development must incorporate strategies and supports to mitigate stress in a sustainable way, and systems need to incorporate ways to visibly see a shift.
Staff mental wellbeing through crisis as well as in the staid and steady of the day.
Proactive systems to address teacher shortages and staff outages with no subs. What is the plan AHEAD?

What is the most challenging mental health issue in your school or district right now?: Anxiety and stress among teachers and students

How is mental health currently addressed in your school(s), and what are the limitations?: We have an SEL curriculum that is implemented K-5 as well as an emphasis on SEL in secondary through their advisory time. Currently our SEL Coordinator is working on PD for administrators to embed the 3 signature practices from CASEL (welcoming activity, engaging practices, and optimistic closure) into everyday practice. The limitations are the integrity in which the program is implemented--some teachers use it every day, some sparingly, and some not at all.

What are a few points you'd like to cover relating to school mental health improvement? (This serves as a helpful reminder when it's time for you to interview).:
-Leveraging relationships to support social-emotional well-being and mental health
-Cultivating a safe learning environment
-Continuing this work throughout the year, not just at the beginning
